| Today I was beaming and getting wet eyes as my dear friend Nathan watched his bride walk down the aisle to a recording of his own voice declaring "I have come with one purpose - to capture for myself a bride...*"
It was a beautiful and God-honoring wedding, and I pray and expect the marriage to be the same.
Our lives are but a vapor, but Jesus is risen, and Jesus is Lord, and in Him our brief efforts, in complete dependence on His sufficient grace, are not in vain. May the Living God continue to bless this union.
*part of a song from Derek Webb's first CD "She Must and Shall Go Free"
Oh, and I don't xanga much anymore, but in case you missed it, over Labor Day weekend I proposed and my fiance said... well, you know. I like being engaged to her. =)
| I was talking to my mom, and something I heard her say gave me a funny mental image: "I'm doing this new exercise program where we ride on icycles, but they're not moving."
That's right, friends, I didn't hear her correctly.
| - I will bless those who bless you
- And the one who curses you I will curse.
In God's covenant with Abraham, which predominates, blessing or cursing? Fill in the blank of the final part of God's promise: "In you all the famillies of the earth shall be ______" - The blessing of creation is God's enabling fertility, fruitfulness, growth, and flourishing (Gen 1:22)
- The blessing of salvation is unique in that it contends with and overcomes God's curse (Gal 3:12-14)
"The gospel is that in Jesus Christ the curse has been set aside and God's creative purpose for the blessing of his creation is established beyond any possibility of reversal." observations by Richard Bauckham, "The Story of Blessing: Prevailing Over Curse" - Perspectives... 4th Edition
| Addressing Psalm 67:7 "let all the ends of the earth fear Him"... The word "fear" her does not mean terror or firght. Exodus 20:20 ursges us not to be afriad: "Fear not, but rather, fear the Lord." to fear the Lord means to believe Him and put your whole soul's commitment on Him. Fear is one of the Old Testament words for trust and belief. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of everything: of understanding, of living, of personal holiness, and of a vital personal relationship to Him. - Walter Kaiser, "Israel's Missionary Call" Perspectives on the World Christian Movement
I still would contend that the fear of the LORD has something to do with trembling in relation to God (e.g., Psalm 119 - "My flesh trembles for fear of You, and I am afraid of Your judgments.") However, I think Pastor Kaiser has some good observations here - that the fear of the LORD invovles beleif in Him and trust in Him and that it is the beginning not just of wisdom but also of personal holiness, living, and a vital personal relationsip with him. This jives very well with what we know about faith, and for a couple years now at least I have thought that faith and wisdom are strongly connected, so why not faith and fear? As Job said so well, "The fear of the LORD, that is wisdom." (emphasis mine).
| “If I could hear Christ praying for me in the next room, I would not fear a million enemies. Yet distance makes no difference. He is praying for me.” —Robert Murray M’Cheyne, Robert Murray M’Cheyne, ed Andrew Bonar (Carlisle, PA: Banner of Truth: 1960), 179 HT: ThoughtsontheWayBlog "I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me. I will not be afraid of many thousands of people who have set themselves against me all around." -Psalm 3:5-6
